Caterpillar 1K is a 252 hour steady-state test run on a four stroke single cylinder diesel engine using high sulfur fuel (0.4%) and is designed to evaluate engine oils for certain high-temperature performance characteristics, such as the ability to protect against carbon and lacquer deposit formation. The method relates to high-speed, supercharged diesel engine operation and, in particular, to the deposit control characteristics. Typically engines fail the test (see photo on left). However, Verde enabled 252 hours at full throttle run with no engine damage. (see photo on right)

The Kyoto Protocol is an outgrowth of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) related to greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Using the protocol for testing in real world applications at the Tianjin Business Company, the following results were demonstrated:

  • REDUCED EMISSIONS : N0x by 28.3%
  • FUEL SAVINGS : 11-23%

Two 8000 KVA diesel-electric generators were tested using eight 250 hour back to back generating runs and three 500 hour back to back runs with oil drain and analysis between each, with a maximum of 30 minutes downtime between changes. Oil samples were taken from the drain in midstream to minimize oil contamination and deviation of results. The report concluded that “it is considered true that the additive improves engine oil performance and does lower the frequency of oil changes. Furthermore, it is concluded that the effect on metal degradation and maintenance and/or replacement will be radically impacted and beneficial to the user.’

HIGHER CETANE RATING AND LOWER EMISSIONSSOUTHWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE

This genset test was done under the supervision of the US Army Mobility Technology Centre which approves all fuels and lubricants procured by the Defense Logistics Agency. The objectives set by the test center were achieved and the highest performance rating seen under the Caterpillar 1-K test was awarded. Since the test, the US Military has treated more than 10 billion liters of fuel. Below are some of the findings:

  • EMISSIONS : 37% reduction in particulate matter
  • CETANE : Increased by 1.7 points or 3.9%

IMPROVED MINE MANAGEMENT​AUSTRALIAN COAL OPERATIONS

Geospatial and multivariate data visualization capabilities were applied to quickly highlight the highest ROI activities and optimize the time of both operational and administrative activities for an operator of 6 mines producing more than 7 million tonnes annually. Previously the location, quantity, physical attributes and the chemistry of deposits was being analyzed in spreadsheets and databases. As the the data visualizations were rolled out the CFO wrote that, “I’ve been trying to get hold of this data for 20 years… and you just provided it in 40 secs.”
